Head of Philanthropy at Afrochella and Ghanaian supermodel, Gifty Boakye pinpoints the maiden edition of Afrochella as her personal best moment.
Afrochella was out-doored for the first time in 2017 at the Accra Polo Club, Ghana with thousands of revelers across other parts of the world to experience the Ghanaian culture – through music, food and unique arts.
Five years on, the festival has risen beyond hosting parties and jamming to music to become a global phenomenon and a sensational tool for promoting not only the Ghanaian culture but the variety and uniqueness of the African culture.
Reflecting on her best moment through the journey, the Miss Ghana 2022 recalled 2017 as her favourite edition. For her not only was 2017 the inaugural edition but significantly because the late Ebony headlined the festival and outlived expectations for a “first-time” event.
“I think for me personally, I can’t really forget when Ebony came out and closed our show. That was our maiden edition and she was so powerful with her craft and everything. She helped us set the tone for Afrochella in all aspects and I think that moment stands tall for me. She paid respect to Ebony’s memory as she said, It was my best show ever. Especially because she was our first female headliner and she killed it 100%. I loved her so much.” Gift Boakye shared.
“At the time hustle was the song. She formed it like three times and every time the crowd was mad crazy for her. I remember Kenny was on the side doing his own thing and we all enjoyed that moment,” she recounted.
Ebony unfortunately lost her life tragically on February 8, 2018 in a motor accident during a return trip to Accra. Before her demise, she was an alluring force to with her unique craft in the Ghanaian music industry.
Meanwhile, after returning to the El Wak Stadium, Accra for its massive 2-days; the first time in its activations – showrunners surprisingly announced that the 2022 edition was the last of Afrochella – as we know it.
Abdul Karim Abdullah, CEO and Co-founder of Afrochella made this huge announcement after thanking everyone for their attendance and continued support, he left festival-goers stunned, stating “this is the last Afrochella.”
“As we reflect on the past six years, we know that the impact that we’ve made on the continent has opened so many eyes and unlocked even more doors to the endless possibilities that Africa has to offer.”
