Nana Akufo-Addo inspired my latest song ‘Sika Mpe Dede’ - Mya Sima

Belgium-based Ghanaian musician, Mya Sima, has revealed that the inspiration behind her recently released banger ‘Sika Mpe Dede’ is Ghanaian President, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo.

The song title, ‘Sika Mpe Dede’ became a household statement in Ghana when the President in an address to the nation on Sunday, October 30, 2022 spoke about the economic and financial status of the republic and in summary, coined out the phrase Sika Mpe Dede which means ‘money detests noise’. Citizens of Ghana ever since have made reference to that statement in their conversations anytime money is involved. The Afro-soul singer in turn used the popular statement as her song title.

Mya Sima mentioned that the President of Ghana is the first person that comes to mind when that statement is made. Evidently the best way to know the inspiration of the song.

During an interview on Y107.9FM’s Y Lounge with host Akua Hanson, the singer made it known that it all began with her manager who persistently urged her to make the ‘Sika Mpe Dede’ song as a song that intends to help all listeners release stress. “The country is hot and even though it’s not your situation, just follow the vibe of the song.” she highlighted.

One fun fact about the song is the French translation of the Ghanaian quote, and Mya Sima believed it was a way to educate individuals who are not familiar with the Ghanaian dialect.

“The people in Belgium did not know what the song was about initially; after some time, they were happy to know they could speak a little bit of Twi; The people of Ghana were now speaking French as the people of Belgium spoke Twi.” she reminisced.
