Designers are the starting point of innovation – Director General, NaCCA

The Director General of the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA), Professor Edward Appiah, has declared designers as very important in the development of sustainability of the nation and the world at large.

In an exclusive interview on Y107.9FM’s Y Leaderboard series with host, Rev. Erskine the designer indicated that anything that can be done to change the world should be led by designers. “The built environment that we have, the lifestyle we live, these are driven by designers.” he stated as a reason behind his take on who to play leadership roles in a nation’s quest for development.

“If there is anything that can be done to change the world it should be done by designers” he stated as he tagged designers as an elite group who bare a mindset of sustainability and their ability to bring out the best ways to improve the way of living in society.

The senior lecturer of communication design revealed that designers are always moving forward because they are always ahead; due to their foresight, they are always looking for ways to improve and encourage sustainable living in society. “If any item comes up, it’s the mind of a designer; the moment it is launched would have moved on, so even though they may be launching a new program today, in the mind of the designer it’s an old stack; he is working on something else to improve it.” he enlightened in an attempt to explain the mindset of sustainability designers carry.

He believed that if designers are given a turn at holding the reins and allowed to be at the forefront of every innovative project, the mindset of sustainability would become a general mindset for all which in turn would bring about a cautious attitude towards the design method, process and finished projects. “I think that if the designers are the start-up or they are the starting point of every innovation and everything then we should have that mindset of sustainability; when we have that mindset of sustainability, we are careful of how we design, we are careful what we bring out, and we are careful how is executed.” he opined.
