Somalia as part of efforts to stop the spread of harmful propaganda and inappropriate content has banned some social media and messaging platforms including Tiktok, Telegram and online betting website, 1XBet.
The country’s Ministry of Communication and Technology indicated that these platforms are used by “terrorists” and some groups to spread immorality to disseminate violent images and videos and mislead the public”
The move comes as Somalia prepares the second phase of military offensive against al-Shabaab militant group, within the next five months.
The ministry of communications and technology said in a statement that Internet service providers are required to implement the ban by August 24 or face legal action, the nature of which was not specified.
The ministry believes the ban would quicken the positive outcomes of the war raged against terrorist groups.
