Renowned Ghanaian DJ Michelle Yeboah, popularly known as TMSKDJ, shared her inspiring journey during a special YFM’s Twitter space event held to commemorate International Women’s Month.
Renowned for shattering stereotypes in the largely male DJ scene, TMSKDJ talked candidly about the critical impact that important people like DJ Mic Smith played in her professional development.
Recalling her early days as a budding DJ, TMSKDJ reminisced about participating in a YFM DJ competition during her second year in university.
“When I set out to DJ in my second year in uni, YFM did a DJ competition because they were looking for a DJ for the Y-Express show and we were about 20 people where I was the only girl,” she revealed.
Despite being the only female contestant, TMSKDJ defied the odds and made it to the final five, showcasing her talent and determination.
During the competition, TMSKDJ had the opportunity to meet influential figures in the industry who would shape her career trajectory. One such individual was DJ Mic Smith, who took it upon himself to mentor and guide her.
“One person that took it upon himself to show me certain things was DJ Mic Smith,” TMSKDJ shared, highlighting the impact of his support on her journey.
TMSKDJ also acknowledged the influence of other female DJs like DJ Kess and DJ MJ, who served as mentors and role models. DJ MJ, in particular, played a crucial role in introducing TMSKDJ to various venues and networking opportunities.
“Whenever she had a gig somewhere she would take me along with her and introduce me as the female DJ on the block to the people around,” TMSKDJ recounted.
