Don't rush with opportunities; build capacity through them - Karley Mettle Tutu advises youth

Executive Director of Ifed Global, Karley Mettle Tutu, has urged young people, particularly women, to learn from every opportunity that comes their way in their respective fields.

Speaking to the host of Dryve of Your Lyfe on Y107.9FM, Kojo Manuel, Tutu explained that ideal job opportunities are rare in today’s world, making high-earning positions even harder to secure. However, she emphasized that a wide range of opportunities exist to help individuals build the skills and experience necessary for greater prospects in the future.

“Comparatively, if you look at our times and these times, things are a little more difficult in terms of economic and social pressures. But if you look closely and keep your eye on the ball, you will definitely find rare opportunities,” she stated, reflecting on the differences between her early career and the present day.

Speaking from the perspective of the average young woman, the career coach stressed that every role, no matter how small, provides a chance to learn and grow. “There’s a saying that goes, ‘jobs dey, but boys no dey’—and for gender parity, ‘girls no dey.’ You might see opportunities, but they may not seem up to your level or good enough. However, no matter how small they seem, if you take them one day at a time and work on them gradually, they will blossom into something beautiful,” she said.

She encouraged young people to embrace the learning process and gain hands-on experience, which is highly valued in the job market. “If you go through the mill, it will prepare you for the good, the bad, and the ugly times. When challenges hit you hard, you will have the capacity and resilience to withstand them. But if you rush, you might fall, and getting back up could be difficult,” she cautioned.
