Head of Campus France, Ghana, Daniel Doe, has highlighted the importance of immersion in a French-speaking environment in improving proficiency in the language.
Speaking on Episode 4 of FrancoVybz with Rev Erskine, surrounded by people who communicate entirely in French provides learners with greater opportunities to practise the language and, consequently, accelerates the learning process.
He revealed that there are levels of proficiency in studying the French language that present learners with the opportunity to work in a Francophone country.
Doe explained that the B2 level of French proficiency is generally sufficient for an individual to work in a Francophone country, as it provides the necessary foundation to communicate effectively in professional settings.
“I for instance, I work at the French Embassy and we speak purely French and B2 is enough but you still need to practice and get better. With time, as you practice in an environment that is fully French-speaking it helps in making learning faster.”
However, he noted that attaining the C1 level gives individuals greater confidence in communicating with others and enables them to better understand and respond to more complex expressions and conversations.
The conversation formed part of the fourth episode of FrancoVybz, hosted by award-winning broadcaster Rev Erskine. The podcast seeks to examine the cultural, creative and professional connections between Ghana and the Francophone world, while creating a platform for discovery and exchange among young audiences.
