Sherifa Gunu, Irene Logan, Flowking Stone, Ellen Kyei White, Joel Orleans, Louisa Annan and Mizter Okyere have been enlisted as our Ambassadors for World Child Cancer for Korle Bu Hospital, Accra, and Kumasi Komfo Anokye Teaching hospital
This year’s grand edition will be the climax of our annual programs with a cultural exhibition themed ‘Out of Africa’ to promote the rich African cultural heritage and businesses from 19th to 21st October 2017, at the UK Centre for Carnival Arts, and culminating in the Kente Fundraising Gala to be held on the evening of Saturday, 21st October 2017 at Venue 360, 20 Gypsy Lane, LU1 3JH.
As part of Ghana Society UK’s health initiatives, they partner with World Child Cancer to raise awareness and fundraise to support children with cancer in Korle Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals to enable the creation of a center of excellence and improve the awareness of childhood cancers in Ghana to encourage earlier diagnosis.
Around 1,300 new cases of childhood cancer are expected in Ghana each year. Korle Bu & Okomfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have been the main tertiary centers in Accra and Kumasi respectively in the country.
The number of cases diagnosed in Ghana is increasing each year as awareness of the disease increases, and encouragingly, these two have been the main referral centers to a growing network of units around the country.
Access to healthcare services is limited for much of the population so there remains a large number of children who are currently not able to access a diagnosis and may never receive any support.
The UK Government’s Department for International Development (DFID) has announced that World Child Cancer has been selected to run an Aid Match Appeal this autumn.
This means that any donations made by UK residents, between September and December will be doubled by the UK government. This match funding will support the work in Ghana for a further 3 years and enable WCC to increase their impact.
Guests include His Excellency Ghana’s High Commissioner to UK & Ireland and First Lady, Hon. Minister of Tourism Culture & Creative Arts Ghana, The Lord- Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, The High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, Deputy Mayor and Mayoress of Luton, Lord and Lady McKenzie, Kelvin Hopkins and Gavin Shuker MP.
