The Mayor of Accra has declared his full support for Beach Soccer as the sport readies to bounce back on the national scene with the first ever Beach Sports & Entertainment Festival.
Dubbed the Unity Cup on AU Day, the fiesta is scheduled to take place on Friday 25th May, 2018 at the vast Laboma Beach Resort adjacent Labadi beach.
Hon Agyei Sowah flanked by his coordinator Sam Ayeh Dartey and Hon Ebenezer Nii Narh Nartey – MP for Ablekuma Central, was addressing media and a delegation from One Ghana, Kwesé TV, Yfm and the Ghana Beach Soccer Association at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly headquarters.
He was quick to offer his support to one of the fastest growing sports in the world with a view of partnership efforts in the promotion of a cleaner, healthier and beautiful Accra.
The Metropolitan Chief Executive touched on creating awareness about the challenges and dangers of littering the streets, open defecation, indiscriminate dumping of refuse and other forms of unhealthy practices that have detrimental effects on the capital and along the coast line.
“I am pleased that we are now going to put in more effort through sports like beach soccer and beach volleyball so that our coast line and beaches will have a vibrant appeal that will attract both local and foreign visitors “.
The Mayor believes this would no doubt create a positive chain effect to create jobs for the youth and attract both local and foreign income generating schemes.
He went to congratulate One Ghana for the initiative of bringing all the regions together to play the Unity Cup especially as the event falls on AU Day.
He assured the delegation of his presence notwithstanding a packed calendar of official activities on AU Day.
Outgoing President and founding member of Ghana beach soccer, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah informed the Mayor that a television partnership with KWESÉ Sports would help spread the sport and related activities especially sports tourism beyond just the capital Accra or Ghana but on a wider Pan African and global platform.
The delegation included coach Daniel Kotey of the Black Sharks, players and representatives from media partners including YFM, Pulse Ghana and Yorkshire Enterprise online.
The 2018 Beach Soccer Unity Cup will bring together the coastal regions of Ghana namely; Volta, Greater Accra, Eastern and Western Regions.
This year’s competition would have extra spice with Ashanti and Eastern regions making experimental debuts.
The Unity Cup event is supported by Awake Mineral Water and Storm Energy drink from Kasapreko with Yfm and Kwese TV as the official lead television and radio broadcast partners.
As a maiden beach sports festival, it is also intended to create a carnival atmosphere led by the Mayor’s health walk from Burma Camp to the Laboma Beach, followed by aerobics, 5-Aside Celebrity Soccer Super Skills Africa challenge.
Performances from various musicians and traditional artistes would be on the program.
The Minister of Youth & Sports Hon Isaac Asiamah is expected to receive the trophy next as the giant gold cup continues it’s journey to various sponsors, stakeholders and partners ahead of the AU Day extravaganza.
