We wish there would be more investigative journalists – Executive Secretary GIBA

Executive Secretary of the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), Gloria Hiadzi, has stated that she wishes there will be more investigative journalists in the country.
In an interview with host, Samuel Eshun on eTV Ghana’s Fact Sheet, she reported that although it would be great to have more investigative journalists in Ghana, the limitation on the number of investigative journalists we have in the country may be due to lack of confidence to pursue such career.
Detailing on the reasons for this, she said, “Either they do not have the wherewithal or they are not confident enough to be able to conduct the investigative pieces”.
Gloria continued that, “Some of the happenings in recent times like the threats on life tend to discourage these journalists. For instance, we have the case of Ahmed Sualley who was murdered two years ago and till date, there’s no conclusion on that”.
She also recalled the situation of a journalist who had to be flown out of the country together with his family because their lives were threatened.
Gloria Hiadzi suggested that in order to be able to get journalists to willingly delve into the investigative field, it is important that the government focuses on capacity building and ensures the safety of these journalists. She further championed that she is certain that this action will be taken speedily so that journalists may have closure on certain issues and be more at ease about investigative journalism.
