The acting Director of the National Folklore Board, Nana Adjoa Adobea Asante has shared that being a student of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), shaped her for the corporate world.
The lawyer who attended Tema International School for her high school received admission into KNUST to pursue a law degree, but things turned out to be lot different in the four corners of KNUST from her High School.
With most of her colleagues from Tema International School choosing private hostel facilities, she chose to seek accommodation at one of the school’s traditional hostels, Republic Hall. Not used the communal lifestyle the hall she said, “Being at Republic Hall was quiet difficult for me and the bathroom was an experience I complained about all the time before going to take my bath.”
She described the experience as one that transitioned and shaped her from the supposed privileged international school experience.
During an interview with Rev. Erskine on the Y-Leaderboard Series on YFM’s Myd-Morning Radio Show, she stated, “I was able to interact with a lot of people and because law was also seen as a privileged course, I was able to use that to interact with a lot more people. I liked I went to school and chose the traditional hostel. It was fun.”
Though the other experiences in KNUST were trivia, she admitted that she enjoyed the attention she had from her male school mates and the food in the school. ”I enjoyed the attention the guys gave me and it was fun. When you’re heading from the lecture hall to the hostel and you realize the guys sitting at the entrance of the hostel you become self-aware because you know they are watching you. This was trivia but it happened.”
On her accord, tertiary students aside from studying should immerse themselves into the university experience but as a Big Brother fan she added, “Always know that Big Brother is watching.”
She charged student to live responsibly and know that there are consequences for everything they do. “Enjoy the experience and have fun but you also need to be responsible,” she highlighted.
Nana Adjoa studied law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and proceeded to obtain her professional law degree at the Ghana School of Law.
