Managing Director (MD) of Hollard Insurance, Daniel Boi has disagreed with sayings within corporate Ghana about young graduates being half baked and unprepared for the world of work.
Although he agrees the quality of graduates may have declined over time, he believes corporate Ghana needs to invest in the training of young graduates to suit their needs.
He revealed it is now common to see companies recruit young graduates and put them to work just days after when they have no idea of how systems work.
In an interview on the YLeaderboard Series hosted by Y107.9FM’s Rev Erskine on the Myd Morning Show, the Hollard MD stated, “The quality of graduates might have fallen but as corporate Ghana, we need to teach and invest in these young ones rather than keep saying there are not good at their work. They just left school so how much do you expect from them?”
Daniel Boi who ventured into the insurance industry some 18 years ago right after school revealed had no knowledge of the industry and had difficulty in adjusting but Hollard, then Metropolitan Insurance groomed him to be who he is today.
“I didn’t know anything about insurance and it took me a while to learn and fit in. Sitting in a chair for 8 hours was different and difficult adjusting to. School had given me the capital to do a lot of things and that helped me but I needed more training on the job. The company had a lot of training programmes and that helped me.”
He disclosed that after he was employed, he was trained for a month, taken through the basics of answering a phone call and replying to emails by Metropolitan Insurance.
The experienced insurance expert charged corporate Ghana to go back to their roots and revive the culture of training young graduates for their roles.
“Let’s go back and spend a bit of time mentoring the next generation. We won’t be around forever and if we don’t take time to mentor them then we wouldn’t have done a good job,” he posited.
