General Secretary for the Tour Operators Union of Ghana (TOUGAH), Yvonne Donkor has shared some insights on the responsibilities and activities of the country’s tourism group.
According to her, TOUGAH is largely made of professional tour guides licensed under the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) with its main objective of promoting Ghana’s tourism.
Interviewed on Y107.9 FM’s “Weekend Rush” with Kokonsa Kester, Madam Yvonne Donkor reaffirmed that TOUGAH has been in existence since the early 2000. She noted that the introduction of the Kwahu Easter festivities influenced the partnership between the union and the Ghana Tourism Authority.
She alluded, “TOUGAH’s primary objective is to promote domestic tourism. In promoting Ghana tourism and with the GTA who is our regulator, initiated the ‘Kwahu oo Kwahu’ Easter event and then we thought it wise to merge since it’s been our prime agenda. TOUGAH has been in existence since the year 2000.”
“We’re ordinarily a body of tour operators registered and licensed under GTA. We are a professional body and we mainly advice our clients and guests on what to do and what to avoid in terms of tourism. We also segregate businesses among our stakeholders like the car rentals association, the hotelier association, the restaurant and indigenous caterers: we ensure that everyone we are dealing with, stakeholders and partners are also fully registered under GTA and have license to operate. Basically, this is what our work as TOUGAH entails,” she continued.
Easter is a globally commemorated holiday specifically by Christians as it marks the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is usually marked on the second of the month of April. In Ghana, Easter is wildly celebrated in Kwahu, Eastern Region. Over time, Kwahu is largely recognized as the hub for Easter celebrations in Ghana.
