People say social media is not the real word, hence one cannot be held accountable for their words, but Gwyneth Gyimah Addo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghanaian hair extension company, Hair Senta, believes otherwise.

She argues that in as much as social media is a huge platform for businesses to thrive, it can also be the downfall of a brand, urging businesses not to treat social media as a play thing, especially when it comes to upholding promises.

“People say social media is not the real world and you cannot be held accountable for your words but that’s not true. Social media is a powerful tool and you cannot treat it as a play thing and not keep your word,” she told YFM’s ‘Myd Morning Radio show’ host, Rev. Erskine during an interview on the Y-Leaderboard Series.

According to her, brands who run activations and promotions on their socials should uphold these promises and not tell tales to winners. “Your word has to be impeccable as a business person. What would be said of our brand when we post on our socials about a sale and have all these people troop to our stores and it doesn’t happen?”

Young entrepreneurs often throw tantrums and respond aggressively to attacks on their social media pages but as a business person, Gwyneth says “do not take things personal. As a business person do not throw tantrums on socials.”

It is assumed by many that signing up to social media will not automatically see one gaining huge following in a day. “You don’t have to assume that immediately you sign up on social media platforms you will get a lot of people following you. Those we see with huge following have worked a lot behind the scenes to get there. It will not happen in a day.”
