Ghana Association of Writers (GAW) has opened its annual National Literary Festival dubbed “GAWBOFEST” with an inter school poetry contest.
The competition which saw senior high school students from Accra High Senior High School, Accra Girls Senior High School, Achimota Senior High and Labone School compete for the top spot as the school with unmatched understanding of Prof. Lade Worsonu’s “Raider of the Treasure Trove” After a fierce contest, Labone Senior High School emerged winners, with Achimota school placing second, Accra High School placed third with the fourth spot taken by Accra Girls Senior High School.
The judges evaluated the presentations from the various schools based on understanding the poem, voice articulation, dramatic representation and accuracy. The judges were Nana Assase a renowned poet and member of GAW, Bridget Mensah PR Lead for Global Media Alliance Broadcasting Company (GMABC), Ofosua Amagyei a Lawyer and Rebecca Abafum, Interim Deputy Organiser of GAW and an Author.
The event which marked the commencement of the 65th Anniversary edition GAWBOFEST saw several dignitaries in attendance, like Prof. Lade Worsonu, President of GAW Camynta Baezie members of GAW, teachers, students, literature enthusiasts among a host of others.
Oswald Okaitei the Organising Secretary of GAW enumerated the other activities that will mark the two- day event.
” We are starting today on the 20th of September to the 21st of September, aside from the poetry contest, we have other activities like literary conversations, performances, workshops, writing Master Class, exhibitions, sales of literary works, Reading sessions, Mother Tongue Explore. Join the revival of our literary front. At GAW, we say Let’s do it. So I say come along and let’s do it” Oswald said.
The two-day festival was held at the Pan African Writers Association (PAWA) House, at Roman Ridge Accra. The event was moderated by Samuel Eshun host of Happy Morning Show (HappyHMS) on Happy 98.9FM and etv Ghana, he is also the host of Factsheet which airs on etv Ghana every Tuesday at 8pm.
