Team PlayProvince, dominated competing teams to emerge victorious at the Takoradi qualifiers of the UPG FIFA22 Esports Tournament.
Four elite teams competed for two spots to represent Takoradi in the grand finale of the competition in December, during the weekend’s wrap of the Western Regional qualifying games in the ongoing FIFA 22 Ultimate Pro Gaming (UPG) Tournament.
The qualifiers which took place at the ‘Game It Up’ arena inside the Takoradi Mall saw the dominant PlayProvince, new talents the Originals, Ruutz Esports and Samurais Esports go head-to-head for the region’s slots and a chance to claim the competition’s GH₵10,000 first place prize.
Making their first-ever competitive appearance, Originals represented by Myles, Paka and StepUp gave Play Province a run for their money in their first two games. However, with the aid of experience, Play Province reps (Mbappe, BigUps and PrettyBoy Dells) exploited their weaknesses, pressing on and eventually secured their slot in the grand finals.
Meanwhile, due to reasons beyond control, Samurais Esports pulled out of the competition, automatically securing Ruutz Esports’ qualification to the finals.
The second day of the playoffs saw the fiercest moments in the history of the esports tournament in Ghana, as PlayProvince and Ruutz Esports challenged the claim as the region’s best esports team.
Repping Ruutz Esports, Corbs, Kennedy and Max proved tough for Play Province taking the decider to the final game.
PlayProvince again with experience to the rescue came out on top leaving Ruutz in second place.
Both PlayProvince and Ruutz Esports will come against Accra’s Team Falcon and Xplosion Esports in the finals with Kumasi’s decider yet to be confirmed.
“Takoradi’s tournament has been very competitive despite the arrival of the new boys. I’m glad they attested to the fact that they fell short due to the pressure but, they also have gained exposure. That is what UPG Esports Agency is all about. Shining the light on the unique esports talents in the country and across the African continent. Again, sponsorship hasn’t been easy as the sector is rarely tapped but fortunately, we have been able to bring Samsung on board for the finals. To our dear parents, let’s try and eradicate the notion that gaming is ultimately for gambling. It requires brilliance which the guys displayed today,” Rebecca Mensah, Sponsorship Manger at UPG Esports Agency shared.
