Keysher Fuller’s injury-time goal gave Costa Rica a smash-and-grab Group E victory, stunning Japan’s opportunity to move onto the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup.
After their unexpected victory over Germany, Japan struggled against a solid defensive line before Fuller scored with Costa Rica’s first chance on goal of the competition.
As a result, both sides have three points after two games, with Spain facing Germany later on Sunday. Spain currently leads the group on goal differential (19:00 GMT).
If Spain wins, they will almost certainly advance to the round of 16.
Many anticipated Japan to defeat Costa Rica, who are still reeling from Spain’s 7-0 hammering as they had just defeated Germany in their opening match.
However, Japan’s manager Hajime Moriyasu chose to make five changes rather than stick with the same lineup, which led to a muted performance and a score that blew the group wide open.
When Fuller’s deflected drive from the edge of the box eluded goalkeeper Shuichi Gonda’s reach nine minutes from time, Costa Rica had failed to make a dent in the Japan defence.
Japan dominated for long stretches after a goalless first half in the sweltering heat of Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium. But until the 88th minute, when Daichi Kamada was unable to finish off a powerful Kaoru Mitoma run, they had trouble producing clear-cut chances.
Costa Rican players emotionally rejoiced at the end of the match after avenging their humiliation at the hands of Spain, while Japan was forced to lament a performance that fell short of their heroics against Germany.
