In front of a boisterous crowd at Education City Stadium in Qatar, Ghana defeated South Korea in an exciting game that was full of twists and turns.
The West African side scored twice in a 10-minute span during the first half to take a 2-0 lead, goals from Mohammed Salisu of Southampton and Mohammed Kudus of Ajax.
However, South Korea’s comeback after the break subdued the boisterous celebrations of Ghana fans after halftime.
After 61 minutes, Cho Gue-sung, the top scorer in his domestic league, equalised the score with two incredible headers in three minutes.
However, Kudus gave a final twist when he hammered in a third goal for Ghana to shatter South Korea’s hearts. Kudus had previously headed in Jordan Ayew’s cross in the first half.
South Korea had more opportunities as they sought a second equaliser, but Ghana managed to hold on despite the addition of 10 minutes of extra time.
Many South Korean players collapsed to the ground after the final whistle, and manager Paulo Bento was dismissed after arguing with English referee Anthony Taylor over why a corner could not be taken after 10 minutes had passed.
In contrast, jubilant Ghana fans in the stands whistled and danced while substitutes ran onto the field to celebrate.
South Korea will play Portugal next, so this defeat feels meaningful, whereas Ghana, which was unfortunate to lose to Portugal, will play Uruguay in good spirits in their final match.
