After almost 20 years as a professional footballer, former Black Stars midfielder Sulley Ali Muntari has announced his retirement from the game.
Sulley Muntari, who enjoyed the final year of his career playing for Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League at the request of his son, announced on Monday, November 28, 2022, that his career has come to an end at the age of 38.
“I just did a few months with the local side [Hearts of Oak]. My son wanted me to play. I didn’t play for almost three years, then my son decided to ask me to go and play. I did that, but now I’m done,” he told Sky Sports.
Sulley Muntari joined Hearts of Oak at the start of the year and made a big impact on the team as they won the FA Cup and the President’s Cup. However, he recently left the team after failing to reach an agreement on an extension of his contract.
Before relocating to Italy to play for Udinese, the 38-year-old started his career with Liberty Professionals in Ghana.
He joined English Premier League team Portsmouth in 2007, where he won the FA Cup in 2008.
Muntari represented Black Starlets at the 2001 Meridian Cup, and after Ghana finished in second place, he was selected to represent Ghana at the 2001 FIFA World Youth Championship.
On May 17, 2002, against Slovenia, he received his first senior cap. He quickly established himself as a key member of the squad when The Black Stars began their 2006 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
With the Ghana Black Stars, he participated in three FIFA World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014).
