e.tv Ghana on May 26, 2023 joined forces with Read, Ghana Read Consult to observe Menstrual Hygiene Day in a literarily event dubbed, “Of Menses, let’s read and converse.”

The event, held at the Mamprobi Gale Community Library, brought together hundreds of teenage girls from Chorkor, Mamprobi basic schools and its environs for a workshop on menstruation and a captivating reading from “The Unattached,” a renowned one-act play by renowned Professor Lade’ Wosornu, a retired surgeon, poet and playwright.

The event kicked off with a mesmerizing dramatic reading of “The Unattached” by Ms. Kate Addo, the Director for Public Affairs of the Parliament of Ghana. Following through the acts included Dr. Wale Okediran, the Secretary General of the Pan African Writers Association and a medical practitioner, Afia Afrakoma, the President of AA Reading Club and a banker.

Eunice Tornyi the host of e.tv Ghana’s African Women’s Voices, then engaged in a thought-provoking conversation on menstrual hygiene, inspired by the theme of the book.

To provide further insights, Michaela, a representative from UNFPA, took the stage to educate the girls about the significance of maintaining proper menstrual hygiene. The workshop and discussions aimed to empower young girls with knowledge and resources to ensure their well-being and promote menstrual hygiene awareness.

“Millions of women and girls around the world are stigmatised, excluded and discriminated against simply because they menstruate. It’s not acceptable that because of a natural bodily function women and girls continue to be prevented from getting an education, earning an income and fully and equally participating in everyday life.
So as a brand; we seek to help break taboos and end the stigma surrounding menstruation. Raise awareness about the challenges regarding access to menstrual products, education about menstruation and period-friendly sanitation facilities” Bridget Mensah, Programmes Manager of etv Ghana stated.

Menstrual Hygiene Day, observed annually on May 28, serves as a dedicated occasion to raise awareness about the importance of maintaining good menstrual hygiene practices. The collaboration between e.tv Ghana, Read Ghana Read Consult, and the Mamprobi Gale Community Library in commemorating this day emphasizes the critical need to support and educate young girls, ensuring their menstrual health and overall well-being.
