Genesis: From Individual Sparks to a Collective Flame

The story of 99PHACES begins with a spontaneous convergence of individual talents. What started as casual collaborations and shared aspirations soon blossomed into a full-fledged collective with a shared vision.

The magic of 99PHACES lies in how these individual sparks ignite a collective flame. Their journey began organically, as they explain, “We started the collective officially in August 2022. Prior to that, we were just a group of artistes who often collaborated together and shared knowledge and resources.” This collaborative spirit is evident in their music, where diverse styles intertwine to create a unique and captivating sound.

Insvne Auggie, the collective’s sound engineer, sheds light on the process: “It’s not really a challenge [balancing individual styles] because I spent time studying and understanding the type of music each member does… there’s versatility within each and every member.” This understanding allows him to weave their individualities into a cohesive tapestry.

Individually Unique, Collectively Strong

The strength of 99PHACES lies in its members’ distinct backgrounds and influences. From CozyPols‘ involvement in fashion and events to Anabel Rose’s early karaoke beginnings, each artiste’s journey contributes to the collective’s rich tapestry of sound.

CozyPols oozes lots of excitement for the future as he is confident his varying creative sides are yet to fully reflect in the collective’s works.

“Currently I’d say with regards to other things I dabble in aside music, these influences are yet to fully reflect in the collective’s creativity mainly because I believe this journey of ours to be a marathon; not a sprint,” he said.

Anabel Rose recounts her sound influences with some chips and cues from her early development as a child. “I was exposed to a vast variety of genres when I was a kid in the beginning mostly because of my parents. From country to reggae to rock music to Filipino ballads I had heard it all, and had learnt to sing a lot of them because of my constant karaoke sessions at every Filipino party we went to,” she shares.

She has gone on to encapsulate these varying genres in her music. “In the end I learnt to embrace and understand the mixed bag that was my music influence. I understand that with every song I jump on or every collaboration I do, I will always bring my unique perspective into it. I believe that is what everyone in the collective brings to our collaboration honestly,” she adds.

Moffy, with his blend of “jama, alte, and indie genres with an African touch,” embodies this beautifully. He says, “being nurtured in the motherland makes it easier to incorporate our culture in my music, because my experiences are who I am and they translate vividly into my music.”

This sentiment is echoed by Kiki Celine, whose soulful R&B blends seamlessly with the collective’s diverse soundscape. “Growing up my granny used to play lots of hymns and other classical music… then my mom started introducing me to different genres,” she shares. “I believe that is what everyone in the collective brings to our collaboration honestly.”

Crafting a Unique Sound: SWMAT

The collective’s debut EP, “SWMAT” is a testament to the collective’s creative power. Released on March 17th, 2023, the EP garnered widespread praise for its unconventional blend of Afrobeats, Alte, and Hip-hop.

From the trap-infused tracks like “Kiddie Time” and “Demons” to the soulful R&B sounds, every track showcases a distinct voice while remaining undeniably 99PHACES.

This rich tapestry of sounds is further enriched by their personal experiences. As they explain, “we speak about our lives and experiences with hopes that others can identify and resonate with it.”

The project’s title, suggested by Jaspa, the collective’s A&R and Manager who comes across as everyone’s favourite, reflects the collective’s bold and unapologetic approach to music-making.

Looking Ahead: Breaking Barriers and Inspiring Collaborations

99PHACES is much more than just a group of talented musicians; they’re a beacon of hope for aspiring artistse. Their “DIY” approach and unwavering dedication serve as an inspiration to others, proving that success can be achieved through collaboration and hard work.

As Freddie Gambini says, “a single voice can easily be drowned out, but a choir of passionate creatives cannot be silenced for too long.” With future releases, collaborations, and projects on the horizon, the collective is poised to solidify its place as a driving force in Ghanaian music.

Keep Grinding, Keep Vibing

To their growing fan base, 99PHACES offers a message of resilience and authenticity. Through their music, they strive to connect with listeners on a deeper level, sharing their experiences and stories with raw honesty and emotion.

With their eyes set on the future, 99PHACES has ambitious plans. They aim to build upon their foundation, taking their music and message beyond borders. Individual projects are on the horizon, followed by another collective endeavour. Their message to their growing fanbase is simple: “keep grinding and never give up.”

99PHACES wants its music to not only resonate with listeners on a personal level but also to be a source of enjoyment. They strive to create “bangers” that are both catchy and well-crafted, offering a complete musical experience.
