Former Works and Housing Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has called for a collective effort by Ghana’s leaders to uphold integrity and transparency in government.
The Member of Parliament for Ofoase Ayirebi, in an interview with Rev Erskine on YFM’s Myd Morning Radio Show (MMRS), noted that Ghana’s governance system is plagued with numerous issues that have gone unpunished. This is on account of what he described as the widespread involvement of ‘Big Men’ who intervene to resolve national issues.
“That’s the society in which we are. So in Ghana, somebody does something—looking at what happens in the financial sector—somebody does something that needs to be dealt with, and before you realize, everyone is bringing a big man to come and have a conversation. If you don’t listen, they will say you are very wicked,” he said.
Mr. Oppong Nkrumah identified this external influence as a major factor hindering Ghana’s progress, particularly within the governance sector.
He advised state leaders and key government officials to make decisions without the influence of external parties, emphasizing that doing so would benefit the nation. “There needs to be some cultural change, and it’s something that we need to all engineer,” he noted.
