100 Days to Go: Excitement, Controversy and High Stakes Ahead of Historic 2026 World Cup

The 100-day countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup is officially on and wow, what a wild ride it’s shaping up to be.

Picture this: the biggest, most sprawling World Cup ever is just over three months away, kicking off on June 11 at the legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, where the hosts Mexico will face South Africa in the opener. The whole thing wraps up on July 19 with the final at MetLife Stadium near New York, packing in a massive 104 matches across 16 venues in three countries, the US, Canada, and Mexico for the first-ever tri-nation tournament. With a record 48 teams in the mix (up from 32 in Qatar 2022), millions of fans are gearing up to flood North America.

FIFA boss Gianni Infantino is buzzing about the money side of things. He’s calling it a commercial juggernaut, predicting revenues topping $11 billion,a huge jump from the $7 billion in 2022. He’s even compared the scale to “104 Super Bowls” rolled into one epic month, with billions watching on TV worldwide and over 508 million ticket requests chasing just about seven million seats. “Every match is sold out,” he said recently, and you can feel the hype.

But let’s be real, not everyone’s thrilled. Those ticket prices? They’ve got fan groups fuming, with outfits like Football Supporters Europe slamming FIFA for what they call a “monumental betrayal” that could lock out regular supporters. FIFA tossed in a small batch of $60 tickets for official fan groups as a peace offering, but it’s a drop in the ocean.

Off the pitch, the vibes are tense. The world feels more chaotic than celebratory right now. Geopolitical headaches are piling up: recent US-Israeli strikes on Iran have everyone on edge, especially since Iran’s team is slated to play group games in Los Angeles and Seattle. Then there’s the Trump administration’s immigration policies tightening visas for several qualifying countries like Iran, Haiti, Senegal, and Côte d’Ivoire—though the White House insists tourist visas for ticket-holding fans won’t be hit and processing will be sped up.

Add in trade spats involving co-hosts Canada and Mexico, strained ties with Europe, and the ever-present shadow of domestic US politics. Boycott calls haven’t really taken off, but the uncertainty is hanging heavy.

Closer to home for the hosts, Mexico’s dealing with fresh waves of violence after a major drug lord was taken out in a military op.

Guadalajara, one of the host cities with four matches, saw real unrest. Still, both Infantino and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum are playing it cool, with Infantino saying he’s “very reassured” that it won’t derail anything.

On the field, though? That’s where the magic should happen. The expanded 48-team setup means the group stage feels a bit safer for the big boys, no one’s expecting Brazil, Argentina, or France to crash out early. The top two from each of the 12 groups advance, plus the eight best third-placed teams, so jeopardy might not hit until the knockouts.

All eyes will be on Argentina and Lionel Messi. The defending champs are chasing back-to-back titles (something not done since the 1960s), and this is almost definitely Messi’s last dance, he’ll turn 39 right in the middle of it on June 24. France (2018 winners) and Spain (current Euros champs) will be gunning for them hard.

England, now led by German tactician Thomas Tuchel, are still hunting that first major trophy since 1966. And don’t sleep on the fresh faces: debutants like Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan, and Uzbekistan are bringing new energy to the party.

So yeah, excitement, drama, money, politics, and pure football chaos. In just 100 days, the world stops for the beautiful game… even if the world outside feels anything but beautiful right now. Buckle up.
