Renowned Ghanaian producer and entrepreneur Appietus has urged the government to pay more attention to Ghana’s music industry.
In a studio interview, Appietus made the comments following the recent demands from state tax operators requiring musicians to pay taxes on every track released within a year.
The producer stressed that the lack of proper structure and intervention makes it challenging for musicians to comply. “Government has made key investments in many sectors, but not the music industry. Take an artiste like Shatta Wale who has made it to where he is today without any support from the government, to pay taxes would be very difficult.,” he said.
“If the government officials sit with President Mahama and say they want to help the music industry, they do not have to create anything new. The systems are already in place; they can get a dedicated fund to help underground artistes to kickstart their career. There’s going to be a lot of money in the country.” he added.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has consistently reminded creatives, particularly musicians, to meet their tax obligations, classifying them under the informal sector. Enforcement efforts peaked between early 2024 and late 2025, focusing on event revenue and digital income.
