Ghanaian singathon contender Afua Asantewaa Aduonum has earned another international spotlight after her image was featured on a giant digital billboard in Times Square, Manhattan, New York City.
The feature puts the two-time Guinness World Records singathon contender in one of the world’s most recognisable commercial spaces, where massive digital screens regularly showcase global brands, campaigns and public figures.
For Afua Asantewaa, the moment comes after a journey that began with her ambitious attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the longest individual singing marathon.
In 2023, she embarked on a five-day singing marathon in Accra, hoping to set a new world record. The attempt, however, was not accepted because of technical issues.
Rather than allowing the setback to end her journey, she returned for a second attempt the following year in Kumasi, keeping the Singathon brand in the public spotlight.
Afua Asantewaa has also indicated that she is considering a third attempt outside Ghana, a decision she has linked partly to the criticism and cyberbullying she says she has experienced following her previous attempts.
Reacting to her Times Square feature, she described it as an honour for herself, her team, her country and the people who have supported the Singathon brand.
The Times Square appearance adds another international chapter to Afua Asantewaa’s journey, bringing her story and the Ghanaian Singathon brand before a global audience in one of New York City’s busiest public spaces.
For someone whose journey began with a singing marathon in Ghana, seeing her image displayed in Times Square represents a very different kind of milestone — one built not only around the record she set out to break, but around the visibility her journey has created along the way.
