Sergio Ramos is now officially the dirtiest player ever to play in the Champions League.
The Real Madrid captain was cautioned by German official Felix Brych in the 2-1 last 16 second leg win over PSG last night in what his 37th card in Europe’s premier competition.
The former Sevilla man is a three-time Champions League winner, but he added his most impressive accolade to his repertoire last night when he overtook Manchester United legend Paul Scholes as the worst fouler in the competition.
In his time playing in Europe, Scholes, who could do just about anything but tackle cleanly, was given 34 yellow cards and sent off twice – both being as a result of double yellows in a game.
But now, after been booked for a late challenge on Javier Pastore in the 78th minute at the Parc des Princes, Ramos is the proud holder of the ‘dirtiest player in Champions League history’ tag.
It’s the second card-related record Ramos has broken in recent months. In December, he was shown red for an elbow on Aritz Aduriz in a 0-0 draw with Athletic Bilbao and climbed to 19 red cards in La Liga – the highest any player has managed.
