Real Madrid have slapped a €750m (£670m) price tag on Luka Modric to fend off interest from Inter Milan.
The former Tottenham midfielder, 32, was named the best player at the World Cup after leading Croatia to the final.
Modric is under contract at the Bernebeu Stadium until June 2020 but reports in Italy claimed he wanted to join his Croatia team-mates Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic.
The Champions League winners have already sold Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus this summer.
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez said: “The only possibility that leaves Modric is by paying €750m.”
Inter are also talking to Bayern Munich about signing midfielder Arturo Vidal.
But Barcelona now appear to be in pole position to sign the Chilean.
