Guardiola's reason for rejecting Chelsea in 2015

Changes are inevitable at Chelsea over the coming months following Sunday’s 6-0 humbling away to Manchester City.
Not only is Maurizio Sarri’s job at risk – the Italian is bookmakers’ favourite to be the next manager sacked in the Premier League – but several players have been deemed not good enough.
Marcos Alonso, David Luiz, Jorginho and Ross Barkley were all dreadful against City and showed why they’ve come under fire this season.
Nothing can be done until the summer transfer window, of course, so in the meantime players like Emerson, Andreas Christensen, Mateo Kovacic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek can play instead.
Sarri summed up his side’s performance in his post-match interview by saying it was “hard to understand”.
“It’s hard to describe our performance. It’s hard also to understand,” he said. “We started well but after four minutes we conceded a goal in a stupid way.
“We only had to stay in the match but the reaction was not good. In the 20 minutes after the first goal we made a lot of mistakes against the wrong opponents.”
Heavy investment is needed this summer to reinvigorate a Chelsea side that probably has one too many players on the wrong side of 30.
Pedro (31), Luiz (31), Willian (30) and Olivier Giroud (32) all have birthdays between now and September and will start declining soon – if they haven’t already.
Whoever is in charge at Chelsea for the transfer window will have a huge task on their hands, which is exactly why Pep Guardiola turned them down in December 2015.
When Jose Mourinho was sacked as manager just over three years ago, Chelsea’s board approached Guardiola but the Spaniard said he wasn’t keen.
And why? Well, the Daily Mail reported at the time:
