Referees Association of Ghana’s treasurer, retired referee Thomas Nunoo, has lashed out at FC Metz defender, John Boye for receiving a second yellow card in yesterday’s game against Benin at the Ismailia Stadium.
Black Stars kicked off the 2019 African Cup of Nations campaign with a disappointing 2-2 draw with Benin.Coach Kwesi Appiah was forced to play the last 35 minutes of the match with ten men after John Boye picked up two yellow cards for delaying and was sent off.
Speaking to Ohene Bampoe-Brenya on Happy FM’s ‘ Anopa Bosuo Sports’, retired referee Thomas Nunoo sided with Tunisian referee Youssef Essrayri for showing John Boye a second yellow.
“John Boye succeeded in delaying the game because if he knew the goalkeeper was to play the ball, why stand behind the ball and delay the game? The referee was right to show him that second yellow card. I have taken such a decision before in a game involving Hearts and Amidaus professionals”- he stated.
“These little things distract players. What John Boye did was unnecessary as an experienced and professional player. We should avoid these things”.
The Black stars will come against Cameroon on Saturday at 5:00pm for their second game of the on going tournament.
