Floyd Mayweather has lived up to the nickname ‘Money’ by being revealed as the highest earning sports star of the past 10 years, despite barely being active for the second half of the decade.
The past 10 years have been very good for sports stars as tv deals and sponsorship ever rising and that’s certainly mirrored by the incredible amounts of money that some of sports biggest and brightest have earned in the last 10 years.
Forbes have listed the top 10 earners this decade:
1. Floyd Mayweather – $915 million
2. Cristiano Ronaldo – $800 million
3. Lionel Messi – $750 million
4. LeBron James – $680 million
5. Roger Federer – $640 million
6. Tiger Woods – $615 million
7. Phil Mickelson – $480 million
8. Manny Pacquiao – $435 million
9. Kevin Durant – $425 million
10. Lewis Hamilton – $400 million
Mayweather had a very active start to the decade, with fights against the likes of Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto, Canelo Alvarez, Marcos Maidana and Manny Pacquiao in the first five years of the 2010s but then slowed down.
He retired after beating Andre Berto in September 2015 but returned to action in 2017 to face Conor McGregor, and take his record to 50-0, but he earned an incredible amount of money just from the Pacquiao and McGregor fights alone.
Lionel Messi might get paid more than rival Cristiano Ronaldo but the Juventus forward is ahead on the money list thanks to his endorsements and ability to sell his social media posts, as the highest followed person in the world.
According to the report LeBron James has made more than double his wages in endorsements in 16 years of playing in the NBA, incredible numbers.
Federer might be coming towards the end of his career but he’s still won a bunch on ‘Slams’ in the past 10 years and signed some big commercial deals, including a 10 year deal with Uniqlo worth $300 million in 2018.
