The Deputy General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and a FIFA Ambassador for the campaign against racism, Anthony Baffoe, has said that to actively fight racism in football, strict implementation of sanctions against racist actions must be ensured.
He shared this opinion in an interview with YFM’s Rev. Erskine on the Y Leaderboard Series.
“Racism is not only about black and white. We often say some people are mixed race. A mixed race person can be a person with Polish and Bulgarian background. It is not only about colour. It is very important that we as blacks move closer together.
I think that when it comes to racism it is very important that we are very strict with the implementation of sanctions when something is happening”, he said.
Anthony recalled one of the instances that quick action was not taken to address racism in football as he recounted: “You remember when Sulley Muntari was also in Italy he wanted to walk off the field and then he got the red card but then later they retracted the decision. But why must it get to that stage? We should take action immediately and this is very important”.
While he admitted that racism in football might not end immediately, he was confident that a collective fight against racism in football will bring the desired results. “It [Racism in football] will not end tomorrow. For me there are some blacks who I don’t get along with but all I want is for us to be respected. This is very important. The struggle goes on; we’ll never give up the fight to say there is only one race-the human race”.
Anthony Baffoe is also a FIFA Ambassador for the campaign against racism, a FIFA ambassador for SOS Children’s Village and an ambassador for Play Soccer Ghana.
