Legendary Ghanaian footballer, Anthony Baffoe has revealed that though he loved to play football as a kid, he never expected to go into professional football.
According to him, he used to organize street football matches but the first time he ventured onto a football pitch was with his elder brother and sister when he went to try out for a team a classmate’s family member was running.
The legendary Ghanaian international made this statement in an interview with Y 107.9 FM’s Rev Erskine on the Myd Morning Radio Show.
“They asked us if we had football boots but my brother and I were both wearing trainers. We were asked to go for football boots but when we got there, we found only one boot and my brother asked me to wear it but I gave them to him and played with rain boots”.
After the tryout, they came home and told me they wanted to sign me.”
He noted that his mother objected and wanted him to focus on his schooling but “My dad said it was fine with him if I could do both.”
The defining moment for Tony to join professional football was after the passing of his dad as he believed that was the fastest way for him to earn and take care of his family.
Tony who was one of the first recognized black players to appear in the German Bundesliga in 1983 joined FC Köln at 18 years of age before moving across the border to join French side, FC Metz, nearly 10 years later.
He played for clubs on four different continents and spent a majority of his career in the German First and Second Bundesliga.
