In a groundbreaking development, Accra Brewery Limited (ABL) and WaterAid Ghana have joined forces, signing an agreement to initiate a transformative water and sanitation project. This unique collaboration aims to construct sustainable water supply systems and promote hygiene education in regions where ABL sources raw materials, benefiting over 500,000 people.
The highlight of the project is the construction of a state-of-the-art, solar-powered water delivery system, guaranteeing regular access to clean water at health facilities and throughout the beneficiary communities. The sustainable water and sanitation infrastructure, coupled with hygiene education programs, will enhance the overall well-being of the people in these regions.
The official signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took place in Accra, with Water Aid Ghana’s Country Director, Ewurabena Yanyi-Akofur, and ABL’s Head of Legal and Corporate Affairs, Solomon Ayiah, leading the ceremony. The MoU paves the way for collaborative efforts to address the pressing needs of communities lacking adequate WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) facilities.
Mrs. Yanyi-Akofur expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, hailing it as a significant milestone in advancing the mission of providing clean water and sanitation to communities in need. She commended ABL’s support, recognizing its potential to positively impact countless lives and inspire others to contribute to this noble cause.
George Kwabena, the Head of Policy, Advocacy and Campaigns at WaterAid Ghana, projected that the initial project could be completed within six months. He expressed hope that its success would lead to further funding from ABL, enabling the expansion of the initiative to reach even more underserved communities.
“We are hopeful that at the end of this projects, we would get more money from ABL to expand and reach deprived communities,” he added.
Solomon Ayiah outlined ABL’s vision to replicate the project in ten regions across the country, with a particular focus on areas where the company sources its raw materials. Emphasizing the importance of clean water as a fundamental human right, he highlighted ABL’s commitment to responsible practices and social initiatives, including supporting entrepreneurship training for retailers and promoting recycling.
“The signing ceremony and execution of the project is line with our USG commitment to ensure we provide safe and reliable drinking water, sanitary and hygiene facilities particularly to areas where these resources are lacking so that’s the main reason we partnered WaterAid Ghana to execute the project,” he said.
“Broadly our objective is to touch on 10 communities in 10 regions. So we’ll identify districts where water sanitation and hygiene is lacking,” he added.
With this newfound collaboration between WaterAid and Accra Brewery Limited, the hope for a brighter future is on the horizon for communities that have long grappled with water and sanitation challenges. Together, they are setting a commendable example of corporate social responsibility, working hand in hand to make clean water and improved hygiene accessible to those who need it most.
