South Africa’s sought-after actress and entrepreneur, Sonia Mbele has reaffirmed her childhood aspirations of becoming an actress. She says acting has always been the profession she yearned for during her early childhood.
According to the South African star, being an actor has never appeared to be confusing with regards to choosing a career path. However, she shared that her family were reluctant as they advised her to take on a backup option.
Interviewed on Y107.9 FM’s ‘Party Pressure’ weekend radio show with Princess AJ Sonia Mbele said, “I started knowing that this is what I wanted to do when I started in the industry. From an early age, you get asked in primary school what you want to be when you grow up and I’ve always known I wanted to be an actress. That was never confusing to me and never a second guess. I’ve always known I wanted to be an actress.”
“So when I finished my high school, I got my diploma because my family were like I need something to fall back on. So I wanted to go study drama but they refused. Then I went for PR and Marketing, got my certificate and gave it to my parents and I was like ‘Thank you very much it was nice knowing you and here was your certificate,” she jested.
The qualified PRO further recounted how she made a stunning entry into the art scene after she was signed to an agency, thereafter making an envious career upsurge.
She stated, “I went on to join an agency on a Wednesday and by Friday I had my first TV commercial published and by the end of the year I had done 90 TV commercials, 60 local and 30 international. This made the agency feel really better and I also felt good about the decision I have taken and the route that I was venturing into. So I’ve been acting and been in ‘Generations’ for nine years.”
Sonia Mbele is best known for her famed role as ‘Ntombi Khumalo’ in the award-winning South African Broadcasting Corporations soapie Generations, from the year 2003 to 2011.
