Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko could be set for their rematch in October with the second match coming in the Welsh capital at what would be a no doubt sold out Principality Stadium
After their tear up last month in Wembley there surely can’t be a single person who wouldn’t want to see a rematch between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko and it looks like we’re going to get out wish.
The two heavyweights really went at it during a modern classic that saw Joshua somehow victorious, after it looked like he would lose when being knocked down in the sixth round, with an 11th round stoppage.
It meant that the Brit came away as WBA (Super), IBF and IBO world heavyweight champion and the man to beat in the sport’s blue riband division and saw everyone queuing up for a fight with Joshua.
However Klitschko is owed a rematch because of a clause in his contract and according to promoter Eddie Hearn, via the Daily Mail, it looks like that bout will take place in Cardiff on October 28th:
“I believe Klitschko will go ahead with the rematch so we are looking at dates. The Principality Stadium is not available in November because of rugby so October 28 is the option. Most of December is available but I don’t really want to go that late.”
At 41 Klitschko arguably doesn’t have too long of his career left ahead of him, despite his fantastic showing in London last time out, and certainly couldn’t afford another 17 month wait to get back in the ring.
Joshua has plenty of options if he doesn’t take on the Ukrainian again. Kubrat Pulev is the mandatory for his IBF belt whilst a domestic fight against Dillian Whyte or David Haye would surely excite many in Britain.
With Tyson Fury still to come back, Joseph Parker making his way over to England to make a bigger name for himself and Deontay Wilder still waiting in the wings the division really is hotting up.
Joshua vs Klitschko in the Welsh national stadium makes sense as it’s the only stadium in Britain with a roof that could close in the colder autumn months and keep the fight available to as many people as possible.
Also that’s my 30th birthday so if anyone wants to get me a present.
