Players of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars have appealed to the incoming NPP administration to restore their match win bonus from $8,000 to $10,000 per game, Mustapha Hameed, aide to president-elect Nana Akufo Addo has revealed.
According Hameed, the players invited the new administration into a meeting at the Alisa Hotel in Accra and called on Nana Akufo-Addo through his sports minister designate, Hon Isaac Asiamah to address issues of their winning bonuses before the 2017 African Cup of Nations in Gabon.
Recounting the discussions at the meeting on Asempa FM, Mustapha Hameed revealed that, the players feel worried with the slash of their winning bonus from $10,000 to $8,000 by the outgoing sports minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye.
“The only thing that came up at the meeting was with the winning bonus because they (players) said the winning bonus was $1,000 when NPP took over in 2001 but our government routinely raised the bonus to $10,000 when we left office in 2008”, Hammed said.
“For the past 8 years, it has always been $10,000 but according to them, Hon Nii Lante slashed it to $8,000 and that they think is unfair so they have asked us to increase it or at worse, restore it back to $10,000”,
“This, Hon Isaac Asiamah has said he will think about it with the transition team and get back to them but it is not a pronouncement I can make here as at now”,
“The players are worried, because they think it is not fair but we begged them throughout the meeting to go and play for the nation and not boycott because of issues of allowances”.
