Just when you thought you’d seen absolutely everything in football, another utterly bizarre injury story comes along.
According to reports in France, namely newspaper Sud Ouest, Bordeaux midfielder Younousse Sankhare is unavailable for selection at the moment because of ‘complications from beard implants’. Standard.
Wanting to improve his facial hair, the Senegalese international is said to have undergone treatment at a private facility but he’s been suffering from a fever as a result of the procedure.
The former Paris Saint-Germain man has been out of action since the start of February, missing the last three Ligue One fixtures. He is also expected to be absent for the visit of Montpellier tomorrow.
Bordeaux have only tasted victory in one of their last seven games so they could really have done without the 29-year old being sidelined.
Sankhare would have been better off just getting a fake beard sorted, to be honest. Instead, he’s now the not-so-proud owner of one of the most ridiculous football injuries in history.
Other notable mentions include: former Reading striker Leroy Lita once got injured getting out of bed, Jerome Boateng being sidelined for Manchester City after an aeroplane drinks trolley aggravated a knee injury, and in probably the greatest injury story ever, Spain goalkeeper Santiago Canizares dropping a bottle of aftershave on his foot and ending up missing the 2002 World Cup.
Another one was added to the collection courtesy of Fulham defender Alfie Mawson in January. The 25-year old, who joined the Cottagers from Swansea in a £20 million summer move, has been out of action since being subbed off against Huddersfield with a knee problem in December.
The cause of injury had appeared ordinary until Claudio Ranieri revealed he suffered the injury by simply putting on his boots.
“It was a very strange injury. He just changed his boots. It was unbelievable,” Ranieri said in a press conference, per the BBC.
“He needs more time. How long? I don’t know.”
