Everyone associated with Feyenoord would have been delighted with the fact they managed to beat Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United last night in the Europa League.
The Dutch side ran out 1-0 winners against a strong United team, involving the world’s most expensive player – Paul Pogba.
But one man that may have enjoyed it slightly more than everyone else was Dirk Kuyt.
Kuyt, of course, played for Liverpool for six seasons and faced the Red Devils in numerous crunch matches in the Premier League. But, at the age of 36, Kuyt has returned to his native country to end his career.
But despite his advancing years, his game hasn’t changed. Kuyt was loved by Liverpool fans for his incredible work-rate during matches, where he would run tirelessly for 90 minutes.
The same could be said of him last night as they upset the odds and beat Mourinho’s team. In fact, the same was said to him by none other than Pogba.
After the match, Kuyt told Netherlands outlet Metronieuws about what Pogba told him during the game.
“He said that it is unbelievable that I am here still running and flying around without any trouble. It’s nice that he has respect for me, especially because he’s one of the best players in Europe,” Kuyt said.
Yeah, we can’t believe it either.
Another factor of last night that Kuyt must have seriously enjoyed was the fact that the Feyenoord fans sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ both before and after the match.
And, although Kuyt didn’t score against United this time, he certainly has done in the past – most notably when he scored a hat-trick in a 3-1 victory over them in March 2011.
Despite not being the match-winner, it’s a night that Kuyt won’t forget in a hurry.
“This is a night not to forget quickly,” he said. “The crowd was great and that resulted in a lovely atmosphere at De Kuip.
“The club, Feyenoord, belongs in Europe. If you do it on an evening against a top team as Manchester United, that gives a wonderful feeling.
“Beforehand I said to the boys, ‘If we go all out and they play five per cent less then we can win’.
“We fought in the contest. I must give a huge compliment to the team for the fight that we had up to the last minute. This is a wonderful start to the tournament.”
So, now we know, Paul Pogba is a big fan of Dirk Kuyt.
