Facebook Encourages You To Take More Control Over Your Data

January 28 was Data Privacy Day, and to encourage users take more control over their data, Facebook has introduced a new education campaign to help them understand how it is used across its platform, and how to manage it more effectively.
As part of Data Privacy Day, Facebook wants to help its users understand how their data is used, and what they can do to manage their own data on the platform. To do so, the company announced its plans to make privacy settings on its platform easier to find, and shared its privacy principles for the first time.
In terms of helping users take control of their data, Facebook explained that there are “many ways” to control it. There are tools that help users make sure they share what they want, only with the people they want to share them with. Privacy controls are great, only if users know how to use them – and where to find them. So, Facebook will be showing users a series of educational videos in News Feed, to help them “get information on important privacy topics,” like how to control the information Facebook uses to show them ads, “how to review and delete old posts,” or “what it means to delete [their] account.”
Also as part of the campaign, Facebook will be asking users to take its Privacy Checkup. Finally, Facebook will also introduce a new privacy centre that has all of the platform’s core privacy settings in one location. The company says that the new privacy centre is being redesigned following “feedback from people, policymakers and privacy experts around the world.”
Finally, Facebook also shared the Privacy Principles that shape the way it deals with privacy and data protection.

  1. We give you control of your privacy
  2. We help people understand how their data is used
  3. We design privacy into our products from the outset
  4. We work hard to keep your information secure
  5. You own and can delete your information
  6. You own the information you share on Facebook
  7. Improvement is constant
  8. We are accountable
