Floyd Mayweather has confirmed he will be coming out of retirement in 2020 and returning to action, but it might be inside an octagon instead of a ring.
The former five weight world champion has been out of action since he beat Conor McGregor in August 2017, to take his record to 50-0, with the exception of an exhibition fight on December 31st last year.
On Friday morning he posted a picture on Instagram with the caption ‘Coming out of retirement in 2020,’ to confirm his return to action.
However it might be that ‘Money’ isn’t about to take his boxing record to 51-0 but instead make his debut in MMA, something he’s hinted at doing previously.
During the build up to the fight against McGregor there was talk that Mayweather could move across to UFC for the rematch and the American’s other post on Insta hinted that might be the case.
In a picture sat with UFC president Dana White he captioned the image, “@danawhite and I working together again to bring the world another spectacular event in 2020,” with the hashtags ‘UFC’ and ‘MMA.’
After beating MMA’s biggest star in 2017 the 42-year-old said, “We gave the MMA sport a boost. Eventually I will move on to build my brand in MMA but for right now I’m in boxing, and boxing will always be at the top as long as I’m involved.”
If now is that time he moves into MMA then a rematch with McGregor inside the octagon would be a huge draw for fans of both sports.
If he stays in boxing then there would be plenty of options for ‘Pretty Boy’ with a rematch against Manny Pacquiao often spoken about, whilst Saul Canelo Alvarez claimed this week he would now beat the only man he’s lost to in his professional career.
