Ghanaian popular hiphop rapper, Thorsten Owusu Gyimah popularly known as Yaw Tog has cautioned upcoming musicians to retain a lawyer before they are signed by music labels.
Yaw Tog made this revealing statement in an interview with popular Ghanaian YouTuber, Kwadwo Sheldon on Convo With The Head, which he shared based on his personal experiences he has had regarding the business aspect of music.
The ‘Ye Be Sore’ hitmaker expressed his regrets of not getting a lawyer in the early days of his career to curb all disputes that have emerged over the years as a music star. “I have learnt a lot; I have really learnt a lesson and there are many things that could have been sorted out if I had a lawyer back then; there are a lot of things I know now that I wished I knew back then. It’s cool I have a lawyer now.” he stated.
The 20 year old songwriter highlighted the importance of a lawyer for every upcoming musician to supervise all transactions and ensure that all deal agreements benefit the artistes before final business proceedings. “Forget manager and get a lawyer; there are some musicians that don’t even know the processes their music pass through before it’s released; there are some who do not even know their music catalog; getting a lawyer is very necessary.”
