Ghanaian football was plunged into mourning on Monday, April 13, 2026, following the death of 20-year-old Berekum Chelsea forward Dominic Frimpong, who was fatally shot during an armed robbery attack on the club’s team bus.
The incident occurred on Sunday evening, April 12, as the Berekum Chelsea squad was returning from their Ghana Premier League (GPL) Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park in Samreboi. The team suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat in the match before the horrifying ambush unfolded on the Bibiani–Goaso road near Ahyiresu in the Ahafo Region.
According to reports and confirmation from Berekum Chelsea, armed robbers blocked the highway and opened fire on the team bus as it attempted to reverse or escape. Frimpong, who was on loan from Aduana Stars since the start of the second round of the season, sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to the Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
In the ensuing chaos, several players and officials abandoned the bus and fled into nearby bushes for safety. Some sustained injuries during the escape, while others were initially reported missing before being accounted for. Frimpong was the only fatality in the attack.
Frimpong had been one of the standout performers for Berekum Chelsea this season, scoring two goals in 13 league appearances. The young striker, previously with Attram DeVisser, joined the 2011 GPL champions on loan in January 2026 and quickly made an impact as a forward/winger.
Berekum Chelsea has confirmed the tragic news, describing it as a devastating blow to the club and the player’s family. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the broader football community have expressed shock and condolences.
