Google is officially shutting down Allo, marking another failed social media and messaging experiment for the company.
Another social app will disappear. Except this time, it is not even really a surprise. Google has officially announced it will shut down Allo, its social chatting app. In fact, Google has already announced it would stop investing in All back in April 2018.
Allo will continue to work until 2019. Users have until then to export their conversation history if they wish to do so.
It is not the first time Google has to pull the plug on an attempt to enter to social media messaging/chatting world. Back in October , Google had already announced pulling the plug on Google+ after years of trying to make it something it could never be.
However this time, the timing is well chosen for Google. According to The Verge, Verizon is set to officially launch RCS chat on the on the Pixel 3 and 3 XL on December 6th. RCS chat will be carrier based and Google hopes it might finally provide the iMessage competitor it has been looking to develop for years.
