The second edition of the annual ‘Damehene’ (Draught) Champoinship hosted by the nation’s number one sports station, Happy 98.9 FM, is expected to bring together a strong gathering of the country’s smartest and experienced draught players who will slug it out at the Bukom Park for the ultimate prize. The championship which comes off on the 17th and 18th of September is expected to draw huge enthusiasts of the draught game and supporters of the players to the capital city.
This year’s championship is specially dedicated to the promotion of made in Ghana products and services. It is also geared to massively promote lesser known sports as well as unearth talents in the country.
Draughts, popularly known in Ghana as “Dame” is mostly played by adults in various communities in Ghana and on a small scale. It is famous for challenging one’s thinking abilities and helps to improve the player’s problem solving abilities.
According to Kwasi Sarpong, Programmes Manager of Happy FM, “we want to increase our support to lesser known sports in this country, hence our efforts to organize the second edition of this innovative championship,” adding that, “the massive response from many draught players across the country in the first edition motivated us to increase the slots for more players to register and participate.” He urged all interested players to register early in order not to miss the opportunity to win the prizes at stake.
The 2015 maiden edition which featured 192 of the nation’s finest players was highly competitive as it took three days for a winner to finally emerge instead of the original two days. Registration is free and forms can be picked up at Happy FM, Asylum down.
