Higuain Reached More Domestic Cup Finals In 6 Hours Than Spurs Have In 10 Years

Sorry, Spurs fans, but Gonzalo Higuain is going to Wembley and will potentially play in a domestic cup final – something which Tottenham haven’t done for 10 years, as one plucky Arsenal fan pointed out.
Spurs fans will be kicking themselves at the opportunity to play at Wembley this year – oh wait. But still, last night’s penalty shootout with Chelsea was a cruel way to leave the Carabao Cup.
Tottenham led the tie 1-0 on aggregate, but their injury-laden squad struggled to see the return fixture out at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea went on to win the match 2-1, which brought the overall score to 2-2. N’Golo Kante and Eden Hazard fired the Blues to a two-goal lead, before Spanish frontman Fernando Llorente headed the tie into extra-time.
Penalties followed and Tottenham lost 4-2 after Eric Dier missed the target and Lucas Moura’s effort was saved by Kepa. David Luiz slotted the final one, but only after Jorginho did this.
Higuain wasn’t eligible – or perhaps even needed – in this semi-final. Chelsea will be hoping the Argentine can make all the difference against Manchester City in the final at Wembley on the 24^th of February.
Tottenham’s last domestic cup final was in the 2008/09 season, where they were – again – beaten on penalties, but this time against Manchester United who were held to a goalless draw in London at then-two-years-old new Wembley stadium.
It’s been a cruel, trophyless 11-years for the North London club. 2008 was the last time they lifted a domestic cup.
