David Kojo Kyei, professionally known as Kaywa, is a trailblazing sound engineer, music producer, and CEO of Highly Spiritual Music who has dramatically reshaped Ghanaian music. His journey from a promising student to a multiple-award-winning music professional showcases the power of pursuing one’s true passion.
Despite his father’s initial expectations for him to become a lawyer, Kaywa charted an extraordinary path in music production. Throughout his academic years, he excelled in his studies while simultaneously nurturing his innate musical talents. Growing up as a multi-talented individual, he taught himself to play various instruments, including keyboard and drums, showcasing an early indication of his creative potential.
The pivotal moment in his career came after completing Senior High School when he courageously informed his father about his decision to become a sound engineer. His father’s initial scepticism was evident when he responded, “I’ve heard of mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electrical engineering… what is sound engineering? Just tell me you want to play band.”
Undeterred by his father’s confusion, Kaywa pursued sound engineering with determination. His technical prowess and creative vision quickly set him apart in the music industry. He developed a deep fascination with the technical aspects of music production, transforming sound engineering from a mere profession into an art form.
Kaywa’s impressive portfolio speaks volumes about his exceptional skills. He has produced numerous hit songs that have dominated the Ghanaian music scene, including:
“Olofofo” by Castro
“Bibini Ba” by Kwabena Kwabena
“Niger Bebe” by Ruff n Smooth
“Kolom” and “Ma Girl” by Buk Bak
“Onyame Nhyira” by Sarkodie
“Where My Baby Dey” by Samini
“Bye Bye” by Asem
His remarkable talent has not gone unrecognized. Kaywa has been honoured with the prestigious Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) Sound Engineer of the Year award multiple times – in 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2016. These accolades underscore his significant contributions to Ghana’s music industry.
In an interview with Rev Erskine on Y107.9 FM’s Yleaderboard series, Kaywa shared insights into his transformative journey. He emphasized how he transformed his childhood musical interests into a professional career, breaking traditional career expectations and creating a unique path in sound engineering.
Today, as the CEO of Highly Spiritual Music, Kaywa continues to mentor young talents and push the boundaries of music production. His story is more than a personal success narrative; it’s an inspiration for aspiring artists and engineers who dare to challenge conventional career trajectories.
Kaywa’s journey epitomizes the power of passion, perseverance, and the courage to pursue one’s dreams, regardless of initial doubts or societal expectations.
