In a major leap forward for local innovation and youth entrepreneurship, Kosmos Innovation Center (KIC), with dedicated support from Mastercard Foundation, officially commissioned its ultra-modern Center of Excellence (CoE) in Ejisu, Kumasi, on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

The new facility is poised to be a game-changer for Ghanaian entrepreneurs and start-ups, decisively tackling the long-standing challenge of transforming digital concepts into physical, market-ready products, particularly for the critical agricultural and agri-adjacent sectors.

The Hardware Center of Excellence is envisioned as a comprehensive makerspace, established as part of KIC’s commitment to promote the accessibility of high-end equipment to young innovators within the country and the sub-region. Its core mandate is to help bring many young people into work through entrepreneurship by providing the tools and technical expertise necessary to overcome complex manufacturing and prototyping hurdles.

Delivering the welcome address, Mr. Benjamin Gyan-Kesse, Executive Director of KIC, described the commissioning as a major milestone in the Center’s mission to transform ideas into impactful, real-world solutions that contribute to national development.

“The future of innovation in Ghana will be built by Ghanaians, in Ghana, for Ghana and for Africa,” he stated.

During the commissioning ceremony, the strategic importance of the center in the national context was emphasized. The facility directly addresses the lack of specialized infrastructure that has historically forced innovators to seek development and manufacturing support abroad.

Nana Joe Mensah, the Board Chairman of KIC, in his opening remarks described the center as a “powerful statement” of Ghana’s capacity for self-reliance.
“As Board Chairman, I have had the privilege of witnessing the remarkable growth of KIC from a bold idea to a national driver of innovation and entrepreneurship. Today, the establishment of this Center stands as a powerful statement that Ghana’s youth have the creativity, the intellect, and the drive to design and build solutions for Ghana’s future. This milestone is also a testament to partnership. Within these walls, ideas will be tested, technologies will be refined, and solutions to challenges that affect our food systems, our environment, and our livelihoods will emerge.”

The CoE is equipped with six highly specialized Innovation Laboratories, ensuring comprehensive support for start-ups at every stage of product development, from food science to advanced robotics. These labs are central to creating solutions that address local challenges specific to Ghanaian food systems.

The specialized facilities include:

1.Food Innovation Lab: Dedicated to testing and developing new food products, modern processing techniques, and essential packaging and safety standards.

2.Electronics Lab: Serving as the central hub for creating the electronic components and circuitry essential for modern agricultural technologies and IoT solutions.

3.Mechatronics Lab: Essential for the development of smart, automated agricultural machinery and robotic systems, driving precision farming efficiency.

4.Metal Fabrication Lab: Providing the resources for the creation of durable, high-strength metal components and structures required for farm machinery and tools.

5.Woodwork Lab: Catering to projects requiring precise wooden components, such as specialized drying racks or robust packaging.

6.Computer Design Lab: Dedicated to the digital conception and visualization of agricultural products and systems before they enter physical fabrication.
Speaking on behalf of His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, Honourable George Opare Addo highlighted that the Center of Excellence is a direct response to national challenges facing the youth, including unemployment, illegal mining, and social vulnerability. He stressed that the most effective solution is providing dignified work.

“President Mahama believes that the most effective response to these challenges is dignified work. When a young person earns a stable income, they gain independence, purpose, and hope. A thousand KIC-created jobs can generate significant annual tax revenue, capable of supporting national development. The KIC Center of Excellence is an assembly line of opportunity. Bring your ideas, your energy, your determination, or your prototype. In return, you will receive equity, a salary, and a legacy.”

Hon. Opare Addo framed the CoE as perfectly aligned with the President’s vision to empower young people to become job creators, not just job seekers, citing the initiative as a “pioneering force that turns vision into reality.”

The investment in the CoE, strongly backed by the Mastercard Foundation and Kosmos Energy, is seen as a direct commitment to youth employment through enterprise development. The Center will primarily serve start-ups emerging from KIC’s rigorous Business Incubation Program, ensuring their innovative concepts have a clear path to market. Crucially, it will also be accessible to other entrepreneurs and businesses requiring specialized services for regulatory prototyping, design, and fabrication across the sub-region.

Nana Joe Mensah extended a final call to the youth to take advantage of the KIC Center of Excellence to deliver great solutions, emphasizing the long-term goal of the facility.
“The collaboration between the Mastercard Foundation, Kosmos Energy, and KIC has created a new frontier in Ghana’s innovation landscape… We are cultivating a generation that thinks differently, acts boldly, and builds sustainably. To our young innovators, this Center belongs to you. Use it to dream, design, and deliver solutions that will change Ghana and inspire Africa.”

The commissioning successfully concludes, marking a major infrastructural milestone just a day before the KIC School Farm Awards.
