Belgium-based Ghanaian duo Kwaku Benson and W9anted introduced their debut EP, “Genesis of a Trapper (G.O.A.T),” in an exclusive private listening session on Thursday, January 2. The evening served as a poignant moment for the pair, offering a first glimpse into a project that merges their Ghanaian roots with their journey abroad, culminating in a sound that is as authentic as it is ambitious.
The six-track EP reflects the duo’s diverse musical palette and their desire to tell stories that resonate universally. Opening with “Airplay Mode,” a rhythmic tune, the project transitions into the gritty Asakaa Drill anthem “Trapper”, a tribute to their rise from humble beginnings. “Sugar” charms with its romanticized take on “bad boy” moments, while “Bando Baby” offers a candid societal reflection through the lens of Asakaa Drill. The emotional depth of “Issues” a heartbreak narrative with traces of Hiplife and Trap, and the spiritual tones of “On My Way”, a Hip-Hop prelude rooted in gratitude, round out the EP’s diverse offerings.
In an exclusive conversation with YFM, Kwaku Benson expressed the significance of the project for the duo. “This is our first project out, and it’s the culmination of years of refining our music and sound. We’ve been away from Ghana, but this EP is our way of reconnecting with our roots and sharing our culture. It’s a story of where we’re from and how far we’ve come,” he said. G.O.A.T is about identity. It’s our shared story, told through the lens of Ghanaian sounds that feel both familiar and fresh.”
With “Genesis of a Trapper”, Kwaku Benson and W9anted offer an intricate tapestry of rhythms and narratives, boldly staking their claim in the music landscape while staying deeply connected to their Ghanaian heritage. As the EP prepares for a wider release, it signals the start of a promising journey for the duo, one that bridges continents and cultures through music.
