The VGMA 2019 nominations were recently announced and typical of the awards scheme, some prominent acts in the country were conspicuously missing. This angered some of these acts as they took to social media to vent out their spleens at Charter House. Featuring prominently amongst such acts were Praye, Ras Kuuku amongst others.
However, Ghanaian gospel musician Kofi Owusu Dua Anto, popularly known as KODA says making awards your focus limits your creativity. Responding to the question on why most Ghanaian Gospel musicians continue to say they do music to win souls and not for awards, the musician said;
“When you make awards your focus as a secular or gospel musician, it limits your creativity in the sense that you make music and consider who and what type of song won an award, you tend to emulate the genre of the music, the tempo, BPM etc”
He further explained that making awards your focus makes you want to do things in a haste and even when the song is not ready you wants to put it out to meet the awards calendar of the various awards scheme.
Speaking in an interview with PM on #DryveOfYourLyfe onTakoradi’s Y97.9FM, He added that “as musicians, we need to take our time and focus more on the music and the craft that we do and trust that at the right time the recognition will come”.
