Nigerian young sensation, Ugochi Lydia Onuoha best known as Guchi, has shared how young and aspiring artistes can win over their parent’s hearts in allowing them to venture into music.
In an interview with Brown Berry on Y107.9 FM’s “Ryse N Shyne” show, Guchi disclosed that her parents did not favor her decision to chart the path of an artiste, as she was initially a vibrant chorister in church.
“My mom did have an issue with the whole church thing but she had issues with me doing music. She didn’t want me to do music before but now, she’s my biggest fan and she’s always asking me when I’m I dropping the next song,” she shared.
According to Guchi, her parent’s reactions were understandable as she opined that most parents perceive music as “wayward”.
However, when one is persistent, committed and passionate about excelling in their talent, then they would win over their parents and subdue society’s perception of creatives.
“You know every parent would definitely be scared especially when you’re a girl child. Because they feel like you will just go astray. But you know when you disappoint them and let them know that there is more to what you think then, they don’t have a choice but to love what you do,” she said.
The ‘Scatter’ singer furthered, “Most parents think music is being wayward but I wasn’t wayward. I became even more responsible and that made them know that I actually really knew what I was doing and I think that’s one step that made them just say okay fine do this, do you.”
The Nigerian promising star is currently on a media tour in Ghana promoting her yet to be released single “I Swear” featuring Yemi Alade of her upcoming EP dubbed “Purple Diary”.
